Craigellachie distillery was founded in 1988 by Peter Mackie and Alexander Edwards. Mackie later went on to build the lagavulin distillery on Islay. Craigellachie village is situated near the river Spey where it is spanned by Telford´s famous experimental bridge.
A quick visual inspection makes it clear this is a thick, oily distillate, coating the glass. The nose does not disappoint, with notes of waxed jackets, barley oil and paraffin lamp. The waxy theme continues on the palate with a balance of sweet condensed-milk-like barley notes and new leather, very thick and complex. An equally rewarding finish gives cloves, beeswax and yet more barley.
